HB 867 – Relinquishes State Land to the Praire Band Potawatomi Nation

This bill would transfer ownership of Shabbona Lake State Park to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. The land originally held by the PBPN was auctioned off by the U.S. government in the 1800s. Opponents of the bill say that the the land was abandoned by the PBPN and that it would take federal action to legally transfer the land back to PBPN. The legislation would also require taxpayers to maintain the park and the Tribe to allow it to remain open for the public. Current homeowners would be in legal limbo, however, as to whether or not they own and can sell their property.

This bill passed and has not yet been signed into law.
