When the Big Tent Becomes a Den of Iniquity

Social media grants Americans a clearer view of what regular folks, irregular folx, and our vaunted political class think than we previously enjoyed.

We can hear the voices of ordinary men and women who once lacked a space where their voices could be heard. We can hear the harebrained ideas of Ivy League professors and the cacophonous noises of pierced, tatted up weirdos; Muslim non-assimilationists who cover their wives in garbage bags; and lazy, masked commies who want to appropriate the fruits of other people’s labor while destroying the incentives for other people to labor. And we can hear the political expediency oozing from the mouths of ethically empty Democrat politicians.

Democrat U.S. Senator from Connecticut Chris Murphy is currently on a book-shilling tour for his book about the “spiritual crisis” afflicting America in which he posits six “cults” as the cause of this crisis: the cults of profit, globalism, technology, consumption, credentialism, and corruption.

The corruption that Murphy sees as one of the six cultic causes of America’s “spiritual rot” are “unfettered campaign spending, dark money, and an army of lobbyists.” He frets that “the rich and well-connected” exert “nearly uncontested control of our politics” and have “corrupted our government.”

Murphy sees “big corporations,” big “corporatized global culture,” “Big Tech mega-billionaires” and “many technologies,” academic credentialism, super PACS, and lobbyists as the behemothic forces that are rotting America from the inside. His solution: Bigger Government.

Murphy writes,

The idea that government should be in the business of securing happiness and fulfillment was firmly rooted in our founders’ minds.

Wrong. Our Founders did not believe the government should be in the business of securing happiness and fulfillment. They believed the government should stay out of the way of Americans pursuing happiness.

Murphy’s causes of America’s spiritual rot fail to address root causes. And his solutions rely on yet more government intervention.

Murphy has had no epiphany regarding existential corruption. For example, his concerns have nothing to do with the “antiracism” grift that has fomented racial division not seen since the 1960s.

Nor does Murphy have concerns about the erosion of normative male-female marriage, the nuclear family with a mother and father, sexual continence, “gender” sanity, or Judeo-Christian religious practice. These are the root causes of America’s spiritual crisis.

On his recent book tour, Murphy addressed one of his obsessions–Trump:

[A]re our priorities right? Are we believing things to be true that might not be true? … listen, if you’re upset about Donald Trump, ask yourself: Why did this country elect somebody a second time who we knew to be wildly reckless and irresponsible and racist and demagogic? It’s because people are spiritually adrift in this country right now.

It’s remarkable for a leader of the party that created The Great Chinese Corona Virus Boondoggle and that supports the “trans”-cultic superstition to ask, “are we believing things to be true that might not be true?”

If he really doesn’t know why the country elected Donald Trump a second time, then demagogue Murphy needs to get out of D.C. and talk to Americans.

Talk to them about the Biden dementia coverup; the autopen; and the collusion between the Biden administration, the press, and social media to censor and manipulate news stories.

Talk to Americans about the millions of illegals Biden and his Democrat apparatchiks invited to overrun our borders, invade our cities, and gobble up scarce taxpayer-funded resources.

Talk to them about the Obama and Biden administrations’ use of federal agencies to target conservatives and foment racial division.

Talk to them about the ideological hijacking of public schools by leftists who have socially constructed the rampaging “Democratic Socialists” and Hamas supporters.

Talk to them about the Summer of Love 2.0 during which leftist insurrectionists destroyed cities and government property in their worship of a recidivist criminal who died resisting arrest for passing counterfeit money while on massive amounts of illegal drugs.

Talk to them about Democrat-sponsored laws decriminalizing theft.

Talk to them about crime-infested cities and Democrat proposals to abolish police and incarceration.

Talk to Americans about their little children being ideologically groomed by leftists in taxpayer-funded schools to think that bodies have no intrinsic and immutable connection to maleness or femaleness.

Talk to them about the military recruitment campaign featuring an effeminate drag queen.

Talk to Americans about Democrats legalizing the slaughter of preborn humans up until birth.

And now Americans see spineless, ethically vacuous Democrats cozying up to commies, Nazis, and anarchists. No matter if those ideological ne’er-do-wells seek to reimagine America in the image of failed, oppressive, and evil regimes throughout history. Democrats WANT THOSE VOTES.

In service of grasping for votes, leftists haul their already-colossal, but ever-expanding tent out into the public square.

U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) reductively explained,

The Democratic Party is a very big tent. It’s a very big tent because there are a lot of people in it, and there’s just like, you know, any big family Thanksgiving dinner, there can be arguments and people jostling, and there’s unruliness. But fundamentally, we all believe in democracy, and freedom, and the progress and prosperity of our people.

Well, political parties aren’t exactly like jostling, unruly big family Thanksgiving dinners. Family dinners are created and held together by bonds of blood and marriage. Political parties are created and held together by beliefs, values, and specific shared commitments regarding the common good.

That Raskin and El-Sayed “believe” in democracy, freedom, progress, and prosperity is meaningless political tripe. What Americans need to know is the specific ideas and policies that Raskin and El-Sayed have regarding democracy, freedom, progress, and prosperity. Are they on the same page? If not, where do they differ? And what kind of deals are establishment Democrats making with commies, Nazis, and anarchists in the back room of the circus tent?

Abdul El-Sayed was recently asked,

Congressman Shri Thanedar has been critical of your association with Hasan Piker. Attorney General [Dana] Nessel said today that she believed that you were perhaps making excuses for domestic terrorism. … How do you respond to that criticism?

Abdul El-Sayed bobbed and weaved with alacrity, never responding to either criticism:

I think the question right now is how do we get together to beat Donald Trump. You know, if folks are serious about Trump being the existential threat that I know he is, uh then I think it is critical for all of us to come together to beat his chosen lackey here in Michigan.

Inviting people like the contemptible hornet Piker into the Democrat hive constitutes political expediency on steroids. Democrats are allying themselves with a man who mocked the assassination of Charlie Kirk, who said he has no “patriotism,” and who said this about landlords and capitalists:

Yeah, kill them. Kill those motherf*ckers and murder those mother*ckers in the streets. Let the streets soak in their f*cking red capitalist blood, dude.

This from the man who sashayed around Cuba in expensive clothes and Cartier glasses. Allying with Piker is a mark of both moral bankruptcy and desperation.

Political purity is impossible. In this huge, free, diverse nation with two political parties, demands for absolute political/ideological uniformity are doctrinaire and a recipe for political failure. But so too are demands for Big Tentism so capacious that evil is welcomed. Ideological boundaries around political parties are as necessary for flourishing as are ideological boundaries around churches and physical boundaries around a country, state, city, or home.
