It’s Sunday, May 31, the final day of regular session for the Illinois General Assembly.
In years past, this deadline carried more significance because legislation with an immediate effective date could pass with a simple majority only through May 31—30 votes in the Senate and 60 in the House. After today, bills taking effect immediately require a three-fifths supermajority: 36 votes in the Senate and 71 in the House.

Ives Files Federal Lawsuit Against Governor Pritzker
alleging Illinois used race as a primary factor in drawing legislative maps. The lawsuit follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which reaffirmed that districts cannot be drawn primarily by race. Ives says the case is about equal treatment under the law and fair constitutional representation.

Election Chaos in Republican Primary, Student Protests, and Budget Address this Week
There are multiple problems in Republican Primary races in Illinois this year and all of the chaos was preventable.
For DuPage County voters, early voting was suspended on Friday and will not resume until Monday or Tuesday. No Vote-by-Mail ballots have been sent out due to candidate challenges for ballot access. VBM ballots are expected to be in mailboxes by next Saturday or the following week.
On Friday, the election commission was notified that an appellate court ruled that TeDora Brown was authorized to be on the ballot as a Republican candidate for the 11th Congressional District.
